Lauretta C. McCrae, age 90, a 35-year resident of the Smith Center of Salem, died at 6:05 p.m. Saturday, July 28, 2012, at the Salem Community Hospital. She was born June 28, 1922 in Wilmington, Delaware, the daughter of the late Edgar and Alice (Davis) Rawlins. Her parents died from tuberculosis when she was 6 years old and she was raised by William and Tillie Davis. She worked for many years at the Salem Memorial Building as a cook for the Salem Rotary and Kiwanis Club and was also an aide at the former Gregg and Hutton Nursing Homes. She was a member of the Salem First Christian Church and its Faithful Friends Sunday School Class. She was an avid card player and enjoyed traveling to Atlantic City, and Las Vegas. She was a member of the Cherry Tomatoes Red Hat Society of Salem, the Salem Democratic Women’s Club, the Salem Area Retiree’s Club, the Rebecca Lodge and the Salem Senior Citizens. Her husband, William McCrae, whom she married June 2, 1941, preceded her in death December 2, 1982. Lauretta is survived by a daughter, Nancy Clunk of Salem; two sons, Robert (Verna) McCrae of Lisbon and William (Kathie) McCrae of Windham; a sister, Ida Belle Snyder of Delaware; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 3 great great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Alice Ann Hoover; four sisters, Nellie Wilson, Thelma Rawlins, Alice Banks and Margaret Rawlins; two brothers, William & Edgar Rawlins; two grandsons, Scott Allen & Timothy Allen Clunk; and a great-grandson, Nicholas Y. Dean Clunk.
