Laurance A. “Mike” McCabe, 84, of Dowagiac, died early Saturday morning, March 9, 2013, in Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital of natural causes.He was born July 20, 1928 in Walkerton, Indiana to Reuland and Arlene (Studley) McCabe. His parents preceded him in death. Laurence married Betty Rowley on September 20, 1951 in Angola, Indiana.

She survives. Mike moved to Cassopolis with his parents in 1940 where he went to school. He earned his Eagle Scout rank in 1944. He graduated in 1946 from Cass High School where he played Varsity Football and Basketball. He graduated from Western Michigan College in 1950 and entered the Army the same year. He married Betty Rowley, his college sweetheart, in 1951 before he went overseas. He left the Army with an honorable discharge with the rank of Sergeant.

He then joined the New York Central Railroad with assignments in Detroit, New York City, Albany and Philadelphia where he retired as Division Sales Manager. Mike moved back to Dowagiac in 1993 to help care for his mother on the family farm.Mike’s hobbies included photography, flower gardening, and antique farm equipment. He also collected railroad memorabilia, some of which he donated to Southwest Michigan College.

His Eagle Scout uniform is on display at Southwest Michigan College.Mike is survived by his wife of over sixty-one years, Betty (Rowley) McCabe of Dowagiac; one daughter, Kathy (Steve Stemler) McCabe of Tampa, Florida; one son, Michael (Shelley Hermann) McCabe of Newark, Delaware; four grandchildren, Jennifer (Donald) Land-Sage of Hernando Beach, Florida, Sean McCabe of Newark, Delaware, Bethany McCabe of Winter Springs, Florida, Mathew McCabe of Winter Springs, Florida; two great grandchildren, Landon Sage and Oscar Sage; one sister, Beverly Whelan of Vicksburg, Michigan.
