Juanita Hogue Madden 1919-2011 Born May 25,1919, in the Piney Woods of Northwest Florida near Munson, Santa Rosa County, Mrs. James T. (Juanita Hogue) Madden passed silently in her sleep at the Florence Hand Home in LaGrange, GA where she had been a resident since April 2009. Her husband of thirty-five years, James T. Madden; parents, Roscoe D. Hogue, Margaret Fleming Hogue; brother, Grant Davis Hogue; sister, Eloise H. Gilleland, preceded her in death. In 1927, Juanita Hogue and her family lived in Flomaton, AL, near the Conecuh River.
She and sister Eloise enjoyed going down to the river, placing sticks on the bank, and coming back later to see how high the water had risen. Juanita enjoyed vividly telling of her family’s experience of “The Great Flood of 1927”. At the age of twelve, Miss Hogue moved with her family to Jacksonville, FL. From the age of twelve, she worked as “administrative assistant” in her father’s office. Jacksonville was home until 1934, when Miss Hogue graduated from Andrew Jackson High School. In the same year, she won first place in the Florida Sate Typing Championship and second place in the Shorthand competition.
The Hogue family, which now included Sister Barbara, moved to Atlanta in 1934. Soon after arrival in Atlanta, Juanita’s father placed an ad in the Atlanta Journal: Typist for hire; will work for $1 per day. Within days, Juanita was hired by two Fulton County court reporters. Her pay was $2 per day. She worked with the court reporters for two years and then worked for the Royal Typewriter Company. In 1937, Miss Hogue took the Civil Service Exam for a secretarial job. She was notified that she did well on the exam and that a job was waiting for her in the US Postmaster General’s Office in Washington, DC.
She received notice on a Friday to report to work on Monday morning. She and Eloise boarded the train late Friday and were in Washington Sunday morning. Two happy years were spent in Washington. She related that she had a different evening gown for each night of the week! She returned to Atlanta in 1939 and immediately went to work for the Home Loan Association in the Federal Building. She met her future husband in this building. He was working just down the hall, as a US Navy Recruiter. They married September 21, 1940 in Anderson, SC. Mr. & Mrs. Madden were living in Trenton, NJ, when they learned of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
After receiving orders to report to Atlanta ASAP, the couple got in their car and drove 22 hours to Atlanta so that he could board a train to the West Coast. Mrs. Madden stayed in Atlanta and continued to work, while Mr. Madden served his country in the Pacific Theater of WWII. In 1947 the couple, with daughter Anita, moved to Raymond, GA. A few years later, son James Douglas joined the family in Raymond, where they lived for twenty years. In 1967 the family moved to Parks Road, where Mrs. Madden lived until April 2009. While living in Coweta County, GA, Mrs. Madden worked for the Coweta County DFACS and the Coweta County Board of Education.
She helped establish the Coweta County Farm Bureau in the 1960’s. She was a 1967 graduate of West Georgia College. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology and worked as a teacher in the CCSS for three years. She was talented gardener, seamstress, and homemaker. She traveled to Europe in 1971, returned from the trip and wrote a twenty-three page travelogue. No matter the job to do, Mrs. Madden did it with precision and attention to detail, striving always for perfection. She loved life and enjoyed it to the fullest.
