Larry Lester Gillian, age 76, a longtime resident of Newnan passed away on Sept. 5 2012 in Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta. A native of Swainsboro, Georgia, he was born August 5, 1936; the son of the late Evan and Annie Beckworth Gillian. He was a United States Air Force Veteran and served a four year term of service in Europe during the Cold War era. After his military service, he attended and was a graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology with a degree as an Industrial Engineer. Mr. Gillian retired after 30 years with Monsanto Chemical Company and its subsequent division, Solutia. Larry developed the contract carpet business for Monsato and initiated the “DOC” awards that recognize outstanding accomplishments of interior design in the commercial carpet business. He was awarded the lifetime achievement award in 2001 for his work with designers. He was a longtime member of Central Baptist Church of Newnan and a vital member of The Chancel Choir. He also served three years on the board of deacons. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother Robert Gillian and son-in-law Tim Abernathy. Larry is survived by his wife of forty nine years, Judy Campbell Gillian. His daughters are Leah Brady and her husband Bill and Dana Andrews and her husband Chris. He cherished his grandchildren Hayes, Kaley, Gillian, Evelyn, Kelsey, Garth and Katie. Also surviving are his three brothers Jack, Kenneth, and Raley. There is a large extended family of nieces and nephews.
