Mr. Larry Kelley Coggin passed away on Friday, December 31, 2010, after an extended illness. He was born November 15, 1930 as the third child of Jerry Milus and Zelma Hammock Coggin of Newnan, Georgia. He attended Newnan public schools and was a 1947 graduate of Newnan High School. He then attended the Georgia Institute of Technology before entering the United States Army at the invitation of his ‘friends and neighbors’ (drafted). He served as a radio operator with Headquarters and Headquarters Co., 30th Regimental Combat Team in Germany. When he was honorably discharged in 1954, he was an instructor in radio communications at the Army Infantry School at Fort Benning, Ga. After his military service, Larry, along with his younger brother, Raleigh, started a business installing and servicing commercial and residential heating and air conditioning known as Coggin Sheet Metal Works. He remained in this business until 1963, when he left to help found a new insurance company known as Veteran’s Life Insurance Co. he remained in the insurance industry until his retirement. Larry was active in the American Legion for many years, ultimately rising to the position of Department (State) Commander for Georgia. He was also actively involved with an outreach program to at-risk youth in Lee Arrendale Correctional Institute through Alcoholics Anonymous for many years. He was a longtime member of Newnan First United Methodist Church, and was at the time of his death a member of First United Methodist Church of Smyrna, Ga. He is survived by wife, Doris Jean Coggin; sons, Randy Coggin & his wife Louise of Newnan , David Coggin & his wife Cathy of Orange Park, FL; daughter, Carol Kohl & her husband Brad of Athens, GA; brother, Raleigh P. Coggin & his wife Sybil; sister, Joyce Casper; grandchildren, Randall Coggin, Jr., Sarah Beth Coggin, Catherine Coggin, Matthew Kohl, Allison Kohl, Andrew Coggin, Jay Coggin and Claire Coggin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two older brothers, G.W. Coggin & Allan Coggin.
