Larry Gene Whitney was born on July 25, 1946 at home in Muncie, Indiana to John and Fannie Whitney. With red hair, freckles and big personality, he always stood out from the crowd. From a young child to graduating from Southside High School in Muncie in 1964, he made his mark in sports (letterman in football, wrestling, track and field) and in academics. In 1969, he obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree from Ball State (College) University. As an undergraduate, he pledged Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Delta Iota chapter. Also, during his undergraduate years, he married Jonetta Jones, Anderson, Indiana and they had two daughters, Tamara and Tiffany. 

In 1972, he obtained his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis, Indiana. After graduating, he and his family moved to Washington, D.C, where Larry began his career as an attorney working as Trial Attorney for United States Department of Justice, Washington, D.C., appointed Special Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia and Assistant United States Attorney for District of Columbia. After ten years as an attorney in Washington D.C., he moved back to Indianapolis, Indiana to continue his career in law as Chief Counsel for Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, Assistant Majority Caucus Attorney for Indiana Senate, attorney for the firm, Saint Thoms Whitney & Courter and then in his own private practice, Larry G. Whitney, Attorney-At-Law & Associates until medical complications required him to retire.  During his career, Larry served as an adjunct professor at Indiana University School of Law and in Washington D.C., a guest lecturer at Georgetown University of Law and Antioch School of Law.  Larry practiced law for over 40 years. 

Deeply involved in his community and state, Larry was special counsel for The Circle City Classic and Indianapolis Black Expo for nine years; participated in many programs and initiatives with leaders such as Senator Richard Lugar, Senator Julia Carson, Alpha Blackburn, Mays and Stuart Families; Kappa Alpha Psi, Inc., Bishop T. Garrott Benjamin Jr., previous Deputy Sheriff and retired CEO of the Urban League, Joe Slash, Indianapolis Business Development Foundation, Inc, Lifetime member of National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and many other associations, affiliations and initiatives . 

Larry loved good food, traveling, photography, art and golf.

Mr. Larry Gene “Brother Eli” Whitney, Esq. passed peacefully at Robin Run Village on Wednesday, November 25, 2020 in Indianapolis, Indiana at the age of 74.
