Eulogy For Lady Jane Rushing-Gromlovits
I am Foster Gray, Lady Jane’s brother and was asked to write her eulogy.
Lady Jane was 15 months older than me. We lived in the small town of Breckenridge, TX until 1940. We had some very good friends who lived next door for our first 10 years. There was no TV in these days. We did have radio and the family had certain radio shows that we all listened to such as “One Man’s Family” and various mystery programs. Most of our time was spent outdoors. We had a tree house and swings and lots of space to play. No one supplied games for us or tried to keep us occupied. We both attended the local grade school called Westward. Home work was our first and highest priority. There were no organized sports at the grade school in those days
We had a big front yard but in West Texas no one could afford to water in the summer so the only thing that grew were sticker weeds. Our job was to pull them up or hoe them down. We both hated the the job of pulling weeds. One day Lady Jane was hoeing weeds and I was pulling weeds. We got into an argument as most kids do so Lady Jane made her point by hitting me in the head with the hoe. There was no lasting damage but Daddy who was a doctor took care of the wound so we were both punished probably by a whipping (this was standard).
In 1940 we moved to Crane Texas where Daddy became the only doctor. Crane is a little oil town in far West Texas and was not a fun place to live i.e. One movie, no parks and no swimming pool. The nearest pool was 50 miles away so we never went. An interesting point was the schools were great because they had the best teachers due to the high salaries to get the teachers to move to Crain. When we got to Dallas we were a full grade level beyond the local schools. So we skipped a grade.
We lived there only one year before Daddy died. We moved to Dallas where mother’s mother and sister lived. We were able rent a house a block from where they lived. We had no income since Daddy had a lot of people owing him money but no one paid. Grandmaw and Anne helped us till mother got a job and all three kids got jobs (Lady Jane to baby sit and Gilman and Foster to throw papers. We had our own friends so we didn’t interact much.
We all attended grade school , middle school and North Dallas high school. Lady Jane was very active at North Dallas where she was on the Student Council, worked on the newspaper, was an Honor Roll student and participated in many Clubs like the History club, Camera club and Chemistry club.
Lady Jane graduated from NDHS in1948. She was a fortunate graduate and got a scholarship to Hockaday Girls school which was top notch private school. She got an excellent education.
Lady Jane met and married Roy Rushing and they raised 5 children – Randy, Mark, Carol, Beth and Mary. Mark has two children, Matthew and Samantha and two grandchildren Evangeline and David. Carol has two children Courtney and Michael. Beth has one child, Jasper. Mary has four children Kristina, Jessica, Nicholas and Becca and three grandchildren Jordan, Garreck, and Lainey.
Roy worked at Texas Instruments as electronic technician. Lady Jane was active in a local Baptist church and later on led Roy to Christ. Roy became a devout evangelical Christian and practiced what he believed. Lady Jane and Roy were evangelistic and mission minded. They worked with local missions and foreign missions going to Malawi twice.
Both Lady Jane and Roy were rock hounds and spent many vacation days in West Texas and New Mexico looking for rocks. Roy died of cancer in 1999.
After the children were grown up and away from home Lady Jane went to work for TI also.
Our mother, Foster Lorraine, moved near Lady Jane after her second husband Robert Harper died in 1979. Mother lived alone for a while but later needed more care. Lady Jane and Roy purchased a nice home in Richardson for them all to live together. The home was great for Mom since she had her own space which gave her complete privacy. Lady Jane was a wonderful caregiver for Mom as she slowly lost her memory and needed a lot of individual attention. Mother died in 1989 and is buried in the same plot in Restland Cemetery as Roy and Bob Harper. This is where Lady Jane will be buried next to Roy.
Lady Jane liked to travel and went to Israel with Helen and I in year 2000. This was a great trip for Lady Jane who got to see where Jesus walked and ministered to people and died for all of our sins. Her family has followed her love for Christ and practice Christianity.
Lady Jane later travelled with us and Helen’s sister Geneva to the West coast, cruise to Alaska, RV trip through Canada to Banff and then to the national parks.
Lady Jane married Richard Gromlovits in 2004 . Richard was a rock hound and they traveled a lot. They decided to live in Kentucky which was close to his family and not too far from Dallas. Richard died there about 5 years ago. Lady Jane moved back to Texas and lived in an apartment in Richardson.
Lady Jane was a very special person and lived a full life. She was always willing and eager to help people and family. She was an inspiration to all her family and Helen and I. We love her and will miss her very much,
