Kirk was the oldest of three children born to Theodore F. (Ted) and Florence E. (Tommy) Broders. From age five he truly lived a “Leave it to Beaver” childhood, growing up on the East bench in Salt Lake City. He graduated from Olympus High School in 1961, attended the University of Utah, and graduated from Stevens-Henager College. He married Paulette Bennett in 1961 and from that union was blessed with three wonderful children. They divorced in 1974. He then married Suzanne (Suzee) Bush in 1977 in Boise, Idaho.
