My family is my world – On February 12, 1963, Kettly Pierre was born to Elmirene Lundi and Mercius Pierre in Delmas Haiti. Her siblings describe her as their foundation for support and a naturally established leader. At the age of 15, her mother Elmirene Lundi made a sacrifice for her family by moving to the United States to provide better opportunities for her family. Kettly stepped up to the plate of taking care of her five siblings, which she did willingly and never complained – unless you didn’t clean up after yourself, as she taught you. Even though, her mom left a few maids at the house that didn’t stop Kettly from cooking, cleaning, and making sure her siblings were perfectly taken care of and didn’t have any needs or wants. They also described her as lively and adventurous; she was the type of person that selflessly invested in everything she loved from community functions, church functions, family, and friends.
Kettly was not big on physical expressions of her love, but rather she showed most with her actions. And she often used food as a way of showing her love. She was an extraordinary cook when it came to Haitian dishes. She was always happy in the kitchen. We have so many fond memories of family celebrations where the highlight was Kettly’s cooking. She loved seeing other people enjoy eating her food as much as she enjoyed making it. Her legacy of cooking will live on as her children and grandchildren now enjoy the kitchen just as much as she did — though I don’t know if any of us can make seafood as well as she did!
Kettly had a huge heart, and she knew the importance of giving and helping those less fortunate than herself. She never gave anything with the expectation of being noticed or receiving anything back. Helping others was a part of her DNA. Her youngest daughter stated, “I didn’t realize the power of this example on my life. But now, I know what an unusual gift that was, to give of your time so freely and often.”
Kettly’s most precious jewel was her family.
On July 4th, 2022, Kettly was called home to be with the Lord. Until her last days, she knew she was loved and cared for by her children, grandchildren, siblings, and close friends. Kettly Pierre leaves behind her daughters – Cherly, Ruchama, Barbara, son-in-law Johnny, Son – Wilzer, daughter-in-law Joanie, granddaughters, – Shaniya, Jamie, Dalia, grandson – Jr, Jhummy, and Joshua, and a multitude of siblings, cousins, great nieces, nephews, and friends.
