Kentland Woodrow Weiss, 74, born Sept. 19, 1939, in Elkhart to Russell W. and Lenora W. (Dunnick) Weiss, passed away peacefully at his home in Bristol at 3:33 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013. Sept. 19, 1939 – Sept. 14, 2013
He grew up in Elkhart and was a student of Elkhart High School. He served in the U.S. Navy and later in the U.S. Air Force. He was trained in electrical engineering and was stationed in California. Here is where he met his wife of 48 years, Sheron L. (VanderVeen). They were married on March 15, 1965, in Carson City, Nev.
Kentland “Ken” is survived by his wife; four daughters, Katherine E. Weiss of Goshen, Christine L. Weiss and her fiancé Romeo of White Pigeon, Mich., Veronica Romanowski and her husband Casey of Kalamazoo, Mich., and Pepper R. Chmiel and her husband Joel of Bristol; one son, David E. Weiss of Bristol; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; along with many nieces and nephews.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Karen Sarber; and one brother, Douglas Weiss. For more than 38 years Ken volunteered his time serving as a minister and elder in the Bristol Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Even after retiring he continued to dedicate his time and passion to volunteering in his ministry work, actively conducting Bible study programs with a number of students.
Ken excelled at friendly banter with his friends and enjoyed growing vegetables in his garden and reading any magazine or catalog he could get his hands on. He enjoyed perfecting his homemade wines and sharing his aged work. He loved travel and the outdoors, including camping and fishing with family and friends.
Later in life he enjoyed experiencing new adventures with his wife and friends, visiting the Great Smoky Mountains and cruising on classic Mississippi riverboats. He had a zest for life, an infectious sense of humor and a genuine love for all people; he was loved in return.
