It is with deep sadness and great regret that we inform you Kenneth R. Bliven, Jr. of Storrs, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, January 6, 2017. Ken was born in New London, Connecticut, son of Jane W. Bliven, and the late Kenneth R. Bliven, Sr. The oldest of four children, Ken was raised in the Town of Ledyard, Connecticut, and graduated from Ledyard High School. Through Avery Point and then Storrs, Ken earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts from UConn.
Ken was an entrepreneur. He was President, Graphic Designer, and Shop Manager at Squeegee, Inc., a silk screening company he started. He also worked as a Production Director and Copy Writer at WILI Radio from 1983-1991. His early interest in recording and electronics led him into computers. Self taught, Ken started a business in animation and sound design, Unreel Studio, in Glastonbury, where he worked for the past 25 years.
Ken was a patient, kind and generous man, who always helped others. He was an avid gardener, who spent hours in the outdoors maintaining his yard. Like his garden, he cultivated deep and meaningful relationships. Those he spent time with know what a good listener he was. What made Ken stand out above others, was his ability to look deep into a person’s soul in a non- judgmental way. Ken was above all, a devoted family man, who adored his wife and children greatly.
Ken and his family have lived in Mansfield for the past nine years. He is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Monica (Avi) Bliven, his daughter, Bella, and his two sons, Kenny and Evan. He is also survived by his mother, Jane Bliven, of Ledyard; his sister, Bonnie Powelzyk, and her husband, John, of Mystic; his brother, Matt, of Ledyard; and his brother, Andy, and his wife, Daly, of Stonington. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, his extended family in Kenya, as well as his Godchildren, Tyrese, Emily Ann and Chantal.
