Kenneth (Kenny) Lyle Brinkman, 89 of Gilmore City died Thursday, September 12, 2013 under hospice care. Born March 10, 1924 in Latimer, Iowa, he was preceded in death by parents Harm and Lula (Whitten) Brinkman, son Brian, and sisters Ruth Suntken, Louella Rothrock, Irene Staley, Edna Mitchell, Delores Beto, Darlene Brinkman, and many nieces and nephews. Survived by wife Phyllis (Tillman), son Kurt of Emeryville, Ca., daughter Susan (Kevin) Kuss of Stillwater, Mn, granddaughters Heather (Ben) Lent of Fairfield, CA, Ashley (Raul) Mendoza of Suisun City, CA., and Lauren Kuss as well as great-grandchildren Liana, Jackson, Brennan (Heather), Raul, Celina, Monica, Gabriel and Roman (Ashley). Kenny was born and raised in Dows where he graduated from Dows High School with the class of 1943. He served in the Army and was a 70-year member of the American Legion. He married Phyllis on June 21, 1946 at the Dows Methodist Church. The couple made their home in Dows while Kenny worked for Toft Sand and Gravel. In 1967, the family moved to Gilmore City where Kenny was a heavy equipment operator at P&M Gravel and Midwest Limestone. Kenny retired multiple times but finally retired at the age of 80 from Wright Materials in Belmond, Ia. Kenny was a founding member of the Gilmore City Lions Club and served as president for two terms. He loved animals, reading American history and cowboy literature, and was a proud life-long Democrat. Kenny was an active member of the Dows Methodist Church and the Faith United Methodist Church of Gilmore City. He was honored to be selected to participate in the Honor Guard Flight to Washington DC in 2010. Kenny was known for his gentle nature, integrity, loyalty, and steadfast work ethic.
