Kenneth L. “Ken” Ullery, 91, of Riverview Manor Drive, died at 12:30 a.m. Friday (Sept. 12, 2008) at Valley View Healthcare Center, Elkhart, after an extended illness.
He was born June 5, 1917, to Jesse W. Ullery and Barbara Guhl. He married Pauline Metzler in 1941 in Indianapolis. She died in 1985 in Elkhart. He married Geraldine Watkins Vickers on Sept. 10, 1988, in Elkhart.
She survives along with one son, Kevin (Marci) Ullery of South Bend; two step-sons, Donald “Butch” (Diana) Vickers of Mishawaka and Michael Vickers of Elkhart; one step-daughter, Sandra (Thomas) O’Neil of Elkhart; six grandchildren; and seven greatgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Junior and Erwin Ullery; one sister, Arline Longacre; and one granddaughter, Denise Vickers.
Mr. Ullery, a lifelong Elkhart resident, served in North Africa and Europe, including Italy, during World War II with the U.S. Army as a captain with the 242nd Quartermaster Depot Supply Co. He also served as a postal clerk at the Elkhart post office for more than 43 years, retiring in 1986. He was a lifetime member of Elkhart DAV Chapter 19, Elkhart VFW Post 88 and Osceola American Legion Chapter 308, was a former member of Elkhart Moose Lodge 599; and was the past president of the local chapter of the National Association for Retired Federal Employees. He enjoyed spending time with his family, and his favorite pastimes were traveling, rooting for the Chicago Cubs and playing pinochle, cribbage and golf.
