She was born in Helena, Montana, on December 18, 1927, to Ernest and Marie Walker. She grew up in Chicago and then in Maywood, a Chicago suburb, where she graduated from Proviso High School.
Kathleen graduated from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1949. She taught high school math in Geneseo, Illinois, for two years. She was in an auto accident in 1950 which caused her to lose the sight in one eye. She moved to Montana, and earned a master’s degree from Montana University.
In 1952 she returned to Chicago to marry Bernard Harrold, an attorney.
In the next 60 years they played duplicate bridge, went bird watching, curled and did genealogy research. They had three children, and lived in their home in Winnetka for 54 years. They had a cabin in the Missouri Ozarks where they liked to canoe.
Kathleen was a volunteer teacher for many years. For 17 years, she tutored students at Mulligan School in Chicago, helping them with reading and math.
She then learned how to teach English as a second language, which she did in the Chicago area for many years. She taught people from Poland, Mexico, South Korea, China and Russia.
She is survived by two children, Bernard James Harrold of Jenera, Ohio, and Renata Harrold-Donnell of Littleton, Colorado, and three grandchildren. Her husband, Bernard, and a daughter, Camilla, preceded her in death.
