Kate Carus of Chicago, IL passed away on the morning of 26 October 2012 after a long battle with ovarian cancer.

Kate was born July 22, 1949 in Urbana, Illinois to Paul Carus and Ruth Frenchman. She attended the University of Illinois, in Urbana, where she obtained a B.A.

Over her career, Kate worked at C&P Telephone Company, Schlenger-Pitz & Associates, Inc., Mueller Associates, Inc., Whitman, Requardt & Asssociates, LLP, and CDM. As a woman engineer, she opened doors so others could follow in her footsteps. Kate never accepted accolades for her ground breaking steps because she grew up with family filled with strong women and thought her trailblazing was normal. During her career, she actively mentored young women interested in engineering. In addition to this unofficial volunteer work, she also volunteered for numerous professional and civic activities, generally in leadership positions, including: the Baltimore Running Festival, Children’s Miracle Network Telethon, IEE, and the Hegeler Carus Foundation. She was especially proud of her work as a trustee for the Alwin C. Carus Charitable Trust. She worked into her last months of life meeting with his charitable beneficiaries and discussing recognition of her Uncle Alwin Carus, a man who was admired and loved by all who knew him.

Kate is survived by her mother, Ruth Carus, her daughter and son-in-law, R. Josephine Carus Cantrell and Troy, and two grandchildren, Elisabeth and Charlie Cantrell. Her surviving siblings and their families are: Win Carus and Corinne Chan, their children Sam and Celine Carus; Elisabeth Carus; Seth Carus and Noreen Hynes; Paul Carus and Tami, their children Paul Aldo, Sophie, and Luke Carus; and Peter Carus and Christine, their children Scarlet and Madison Carus.

Kate will be remembered by friends and family as a strong and tireless woman. Even during her illness, she usually could out last everyone. The loss of her unique presence will be felt by all.
