Karen Sue Degerstrom, age 65, peacefully passed away in her home on March 7 th , 2017 after a thirteen-year battle with breast cancer. She was the loving daughter to her mother, Suzanne Degerstrom and predeceased by her father, Hal Degerstrom. She was the doting mother of Jacob (Jihyang Kim) Hensel, Eric (Hana Alawi) Hensel, Laurel (Ben) Wightman, and Lindsey (Joseph) Williamson; and sister of Dede (Shawn) Noonan and Jan (the late Steven) Hintz. She was also the aunt to Brian, Katie, Michael, Michelle, and Riley and the grandmother to Aeryn, Elli, Sedra, Humaid, Julian, Moza, and Theyab. As a graduate of Owosso High School (1973) and Daughter’s of the American Revolution (DAR) winner, Karen went on to earn a BS in Multi-Disciplinary Social Science, BA in English Education, and subsequently an MA in Literacy Instruction from Michigan State University; thus, she spent her professional life as a teacher impacting lives of all ages from elementary through college. Her volunteer contributions to the Red Cedar Writing Project, the Sense of Community – Your Neighborhood Connections, and fundraising for Abu Dhabi’s Special Care Center for people with disabilities demonstrate her dedication to others. She had such an optimistic zest for life and greatly enjoyed being outside, gardening, reading, listening to NPR, playing the piano, and cooking. But her distinguishing legacy was her devotion as a single mother to raising and supporting her four children and as the doting grandmother to her seven grandchildren. May she find peace and comfort in her next expedition.
