June Marie Derks (nee Rhodes), of Chandler, AZ passed June 14, 2011. She was born June 22, 1931 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada to John and Amelia Rhodes. June graduated from The Sault Collegiate Institute in 1949, attended business college and began her career as a Secretary. In 1951, she serendipitously sat next to Sgt. John Derks of Clyde, Missouri on the back of a bus while he was stationed as part of the United States Army St. Lawrence Seaway security detail during the Korean War. They married in 1953 and began their 58-year partnership living for significant periods of time in Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas, California, Illinois, Indiana and Arizona. June was known for her resilience, dignity and embrace of life in the face of adversity, her wit and laughter, and her unconditional love of family and friends.
June is survived by her husband, John; their children, Cheryl, Judy Chamberlain (Mike) and Steve (Laura);their grandchildren Ben, Jordan, Grace, Jack and Nora as well as her sister, Linda Moss (Cliff) and brothers Bill (Catherine) and Doug (JoAnn) and many nieces and nephews. Her brother, John preceded her in death.
