June Brand, age 84, of Jacksonville died on Monday afternoon, November 1, 2010 at Barton Stone Nursing Home. She was born on June 4, 1926 in Jacksonville, Illinois the daughter of Lloyd and Mary Jane “Jennie” Newby Reid. On June 8, 1950, she married Robert Brand. He preceded her in death on November 6, 2008.
Mrs. Brand is survived by a daughter, Roberta “Bobbie” Jane Westergaard, her husband, Wayne, and two grandchildren, Benjamin Michael and Nicole Marie Westergaard. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Charles Lettsom Reid and a nephew Charles Lloyd Reid.
Mrs. Brand was a 1943 honor graduate of Jacksonville High School and a 1947 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Illinois College. At Illinois College, she was a member and president of Sigma Phi Epsilon Literary Society. She completed further studies at various universities, including Oakland University at Rochester, Michigan and the University of Toulouse, France.
Mrs. Brand taught English and Latin at Roseville, Illinois and Chapin High School, where she also served as the school librarian. Later she taught French and Latin at Jacksonville High School for 20 years and served as the foreign language department chairman for several years. In addition, she served as an evaluator in a foreign language on the North Central and State of Illinois teams.
Mrs. Brand became a charter member of the Omicron Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, an honorary educators’ sorority in June, 1954. She served her chapter in multiple capacities including two terms as chapter president. On the state level, she served Alpha Delta Kappa as bond and bylaws chairman, recording and corresponding secretaries, and as parliamentarian.
Mrs. Brand was a past president and former member of the Jacksonville Pilot Club. Her other former memberships in which she also held offices or chairmanships include the Jacksonville Education Association, American Association of University Women, and League of Women Voters of Morgan County.
Outdoor activities such as gardening, swimming and camping were important hobbies throughout her life.
