Julia Cohen Callaway, 88, of Salisbury passed away on Friday, September 17, 2021 at The Meadows of Rockwell.
Born in Rowan County on March 20, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Viola Allen and Rufus Cohen.
Mrs. Callaway worked as a credit reporter for the Salisbury-Rowan Merchant’s Association. She was a member of First United Church of Christ, where she sang in the choir. She was a member of the Merchant’s Association, Holiday Caravan Board, Spencer Jaycettes, West Rowan Band Parents, and the Bridge Club. Mrs. Callaway also worked as a Rowan County Fair entry clerk. Rodney and Julia always made sure the girls were well traveled. Julia always made sure there were special snacks for those trips. She was an excellent cake decorator and cook. She was the “cheerleader” for the girls to see that they had every opportunity that they pursued. Mrs. Callaway was also the caregiver for her own mother for many years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rodney Arlin Callaway, who passed away on September 12, 2021 and son-in-law, Jeff Surratt.
Left to cherish her memory are her three daughters: Sandra Surratt, Kim Crawford and husband Tim of Salisbury, North Carolina, and Susan Clegg and husband Richard of Townsville, North Carolina. Grandsons, Jonathan Preslar and wife Michelle of Lexington, Missouri and Brandon Crawford. Great grandsons Alex Crawford, Nathan Crawford, Dean Crawford, Noah Caraway, and Benjamin Preslar.
