Joyce Walker Northern passed away in Plano, Texas on Friday, March 14, 2014.
Joyce was born October 9, 1930 in Picayune, Mississippi. She was raised in Picayune and Pearl River County, Mississippi. She graduated from Picayune High School. Joyce attended Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Hattiesburg, Mississippi and was a Registered Nurse.
Joyce was married to Turner Porterfield Northern, a petroleum engineer she met in New Orleans, La. She was the head nurse for a section of the pediatrics ward at Charity Hospital at the time. The oil business moved the couple and their two small children from New Orleans to Buras, Louisiana to Wichita, Kansas and finally to Amarillo, Texas. After Turner’s death, Joyce moved to Plano, Texas. She enjoyed gardening – being an active Garden Club member while in New Orleans, her church, antiquing and family. She was blessed to live near her son, daughter-in-law and granddaughters during her last few years.
During her life, Joyce was an active member of Grace Presbyterian Church in Plano and formerly of St Luke Presbyterian Church in Amarillo and New Palestine Baptist Church in Picayune.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Turner Porterfield Northern, her parents Buford Walker and Dora Lee Sones Walker, sister Jean Walker Rose and brother James Buford “Jimmy” Walker, Sr.
Survivors are her two children: Barbara Ruth Northern Johnson (Jimmy Lee Johnson) and Nathan Alan “Nate” Northern (Alysen Beasley Northern), grandson Ross Davis Johnson, granddaughters Amanda Nicole Northern and Kendall Brooke Northern; brothers, Tommy Luther Walker (Mary Elizabeth Smith Walker) and Robert Stewart “Bobby” Walker (Wanda Jean King Walker), sister-in-law Lyndol Lane Howard Walker (Mrs. James B) and many adored nieces, nephews and cousins.
