Joyce E. Dawson, daughter of the late Rev. Neil Ferguson and Lillie Hasty, was born in Raeford, NC on April 12, 1937. She departed this life on June 15, 2007.

She received her education at Upchurch High School in Hoke County, NC. Upon graduating she migrated to Brooklyn, NY where she later met and married her husband Herman Dawson. Joyce worked as a dietician at the Kingsbrook Medical Center, in New York, for many years. She also worked as a volunteer for the Mayor office of New York providing clothing for the homeless and the needy. She has devoted many years to helping her family and others. After retiring in 2004 she and her husband moved back to Fayetteville, NC where she became a faithful member of the Simon Temple AME Zion Churcha”singing on the Chancellor Choir. She loved to sing and her favorite song was “Me and the devil has a tussle, Thank God I won.”

She leaves to cherish her memories: her husband, Herman Dawson, her children; Lawrence (Larry) Dawson, Louis Purcell of NYC, Terry Goodwin (Sophia) of NC, Audrey Atkinson of NC, JoAnn Locklear (Charles) of Long Island, NY; three aunts, Francis Graham of Raeford, NC, Ioma Lockridge of Brooklyn, NY, and Ruth Ferguson of Amityville, NY; five sisters, Hattie Bell McLaughlin, Fannie Youngblood, Leona Lewis (Earl), Doris Williams, Marjorie Ferguson, all of NC; six brothers, Dan Ferguson, Neil Ferguson (Lisa), Johnny Ferguson (Celeste), Walter Ferguson of NC, Lorenzo Ferguson (Delphine), Otis Ferguson (Sherry) of Bridgeport, CT; three brother-in-laws, Ewell Dawson, Rev. Charles Dawson (Ruby) of Brooklyn, NY, Willie Dawson (Evelyn) of St. Pete, FL; twenty two grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and a host of godchildren, nieces, nephews, Cousins and friends.
