Joy Phillips Martin
Joy Phillips Martin departed this life on Sunday, March 6, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. at Merit Health Central in Jackson. She was born in Lake Charles, LA on June 9, 1934, and was 81 years old. She was the daughter of Howard Alfred Phillips and Leslie Taylor Phillips.
Joy loved Christ, her family, and her country. A long time member of the First Baptist Church of Vicksburg, she taught Sunday School for the 4th grade for many years and later served as director of the 4th grade department.
A devoted parent, she was active in the P.T.A. and as a room mother. She was an avid photographer and, for many years, her night photograph of the Old Courthouse Museum was used in a City of Vicksburg tourist brochure. She enjoyed sharing her talent at cross stitching with her friends and family members.
Joy was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was survived by her devoted and loving husband of over 63 years, Ken Martin, Sr.; children, Lynne (Bobby) Waterbury of Clinton, Ken (Jan) Martin, Jr. of Madison, and Tim Martin of Ridgeland; grandchildren, Jenny (Philip) Buchanan, Katie (Philip) Hoggatt, Matthew (Brooke) Martin, Alec Martin, Justin Asbill, and Jayson Asbill; and great-grandchildren, Kade, Jackson, and Tyler. She was survived by her beloved and loving sister Millie Phillips (Michael) Pabst of Longview, Texas. Additionally, she was survived by her aunt Francis Smith and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
