Joseph Anthony “Joe” Ferro, 94, of Elkhart, passed away Monday morning, March 18, 2013, at his home of natural causes.
Joe was born Feb. 1, 1919, in Hudson, Mich., to the late Natale “Frank” and Nunziatta “Rose” (Viteritto) Ferro.
His brothers, Ernest, Michael and James Ferro; and sisters, Mary Trekelo, Virginia Ferro, Elizabeth Singleton and Mildred Wyhler, preceded him in death.
Joe married the former Helen B. Patanelli on Sept. 10, 1949, at St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church.
Helen survives, as well as his son, Jeffery (Flor) Ferro of Santa Monica, Calif.; daughters Debra McShane of Elkhart and Kristin (Chad) Sears of Goshen; and six loving grandchildren, Connor, Collin and Kelsey McShane, Nick Ferro and Olivia and Mitchell Sears.
Joseph retired from Miles Laboratories in 1981 after more than 30 years of service. He graduated from Elkhart High School and then served in the U. S. Army in the 739th AAA Gun Battalion from 1941 until his honorable discharge in 1945. He was a member of both St. Vincent DePaul and St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. He was a member of the I.A.R.A. and enjoyed gardening, bowling, fishing and playing golf. However, most important to Joe was the time he spent with his wonderful grandchildren.
