In the early morning hours of the morning on July 2, 2018, God in heaven saw his faithful servant Joseph Henry “Sonny” Lewis had fulfilled his mission in his earthly life and was due the ultimate healing of the illnesses that made life for him so difficult in his later years. He had been born in Newnan Hospital on January 23, 1941 and was one the younger of two children born to the late George Henry and Sara Copeland Lewis. Sonny, as he became known, would follow in his father’s footsteps and become a welder for Brown Steel, a local tank manufacturer. Sonny was known as a hard worker and extremely dedicated to whatever task was before him. Sonny possessed a strong work ethic, and even after his many years at Brown Steel, he was offered employment by Gary Horton driving, of all things, a dump truck! For Sonny, this was a dream job and he loved every minute of it. Known as a man of great faith in God, Sonny was a member of Bethany Lime Congregational Christian Church. He was a great cook and enjoyed being a part of the church’s annual barbeque. Sonny was a devoted husband to his wife, Sandra Mills Lewis. Ever conscious of his role as a parent, he was an exemplary father to his sons Jody Lewis and Brian Lewis and his wife Sharon. He loved his granddaughter Bethany Klaire Lewis. Also surviving is his sister Joyce Lewis Thompson and her husband L.O.; his sister-in-law Carol Mills Willingham and his brother-in-law Mickey Mills. There is a large extended family of nieces and nephews.
