Joseph G. Grande, age 87, retired City of Rome Chief of Police, passed away November 15, 2012 at Eastern Star Home with his loving family by his side.
He was born in Rome on May 19, 1925, to Stephan and Fannie Pasca Grande. Joe was united in marriage to the former Elizabeth Anne Toepp on August 20, 1949. They celebrated their 63 anniversary in August.
Surviving Joe are his wife Anne, four daughters, Mary Beth Recchio of Rome, Jeanne Sheehan, Middleburg, Carol (Jim) Commisso, New Hartford, Susan Grande (Bill Clark), and one son, Paul of Rome. He also leaves behind 7 beloved grandchildren who were the lights of his life, Michael Recchio, Erin Perkins, Hannah and Patrick Sheehan, Sara Beale, and Allie and Nikki Grande.
Joe graduated from RFA in 1943 and joined the Navy the same year. He played varsity baseball and basketball and the love of sports continued his whole life as he was also a part of the Rome Industrial league and was avid Yankees fan.
Joe served in the Navy, in the European and Pacific Theatres as a pharmacist mate, second class. He joined the Rome Police Department in 1948 as a patrolman, was later promoted to detective and also served as President of the Police Benevolent Association for many years. He was promoted to Chief of Police on March 7, 1974 and held the position until he retired in October 1987. He was honored as the NYS Moose
Club Policeman of the Year in 1973.
