Joseph Edward Boike was lucky. He was born 2/14/55, a valentine, to loving parents, Edward Joseph and Nancy Lee Boike, and a loving clan and community. Heir to old world feasting traditions via his two beloved grandmothers, his early childhood was a celebration of delight and connection. In his early youth he had just the right amount of freedom to explore healthy mischief, and the stories of his buddies and “the hut” (to be told at the spring celebration of his life) are hilarious.

As he matured he became a leader among his peers and a passionate inquirer into global views of spirituality. He had two siblings, who have remained bosom friends throughout his too-short life. Betsy Boike Hire was born 2 years after Joseph and, due to her precocious abilities to keep up with his shenanigans, was great fun as a companion- life long. And his brother, John Boike, born four years after Betsy, was exhilarating in his daring intellect, fully matched by his golden heart. The three of them have been exemplary in their abiding good will for each other through all the ups and downs of their lives. Joseph’s closest family include his devoted wife, Sharrel, his daughter, Anna Haag who is a pillar of loving community, his other daughter, the brave and nurturing Emily and his dynamic whiz-of-a-son, Matthew. Joseph earned his bachelors degree from IU in Applied Psychophysiology.

Given the fact that he was simultaneously raising a family, taking a Greene Co. property from shack to work of art, practicing biofeedback and trigger point therapy (like no other), integrating vast amounts of experience and wisdom in the natural healing arts, writing an impressive collection of journals, etc., the mere 30 years required to complete his degree was quite respectable. And just as his life’s work was flowering in the form of Touchstone Wellness Massage and Yoga, his sore throat became known as cancer.

A little over a year later, yesterday morning, he slipped away about 3 am. Our beloved Joey, Joe, Joseph, Jozeppy, Zep, Dad, Grandpa, is now here only in our hearts, and in the momentum of our intention to be well- his mission fulfilled.
