John William Payne, 88, a resident of Niceville, Fla., died there Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2012. He was born Aug. 28, 1924, in South Pittsburg, Tenn., the son of the late Harvey Coleman and Vera Creek Payne.
During World War II he served in the Marines as a submarine tracker.
After the war he worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority in Chattanooga, Tenn., for 37 years. He moved to Niceville, Fla., in 1988.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife of almost 57 years, Nancy Barham Payne, who died in 2007. Survivors include children, John Charles Payne of Chattanooga, Wendell Lee Payne of Montgomery, Ala.
