JOHN WILLIAM ARMSTRONG November 9, 1932 February 7, 2022 John Armstrong of Sandy passed away peacefully, Monday, February 7, 2022 at the George E. Wahlen Ogden Veteran’s Home. John was born in Kansas City, Missouri, November 9, 1932 to Lucius James and Liebe Valkenburg Armstrong. John is survived by daughters Patricia Wickersham (John) of North Ogden, UT and Barbara Scheibel (Paul) of Mission, TX, daughterin-law Carol Ann (Layton) Wilson (David Crislip) of Boulder CO, sisters Tish Galusha (Dick) of Wagoner, OK and Catherine Ellsworth of Kansas City, MO, 8 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, 4 nieces and 3 nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Armstrong, son Ronald D. Layton (Vietnam), grandson Sidney Robert Kimbrough and grandson Shawn Allen Wickersham. John served in the 142nd military police company in the Korean War between February 1953 and December 1954. John graduated from the University of Kansas, Lawrence Kansas in 1960, earning a degree in diplomatic relations. John spoke fluent Spanish and Portuguese. In the early years of his adulthood, John resided in Kansas City, where he met Helen Layton. John and Helen were married on July 30, 1960. John enjoyed a long and successful career with the EI DuPont de Nemours Company, renowned for his expertise in automotive refinish. John and Helen were transferred seven times during John’s career, including the Caribbean, and throughout the United States, until they settled down in Sandy, Utah in 1986. John had a special talent in furniture restoration as well as maintaining and collecting antique and modern mechanical clocks. So evident was his love for clocks that his grandchildren referred to him as “Papa Clock”. John’s other interests included boating, fishing, hunting, collecting antique items and “tinkering”. John had a special place in his heart for animals. There were always cats and dogs, and even a skunk. Mealtimes at the Armstrong house were referred to as “feeding time at the zoo.
