John W. Hoagland, 68, of Jacksonville, IL died Friday, December 9, 2011 at the White Hall Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in White Hall, IL.
He was born June 14, 1943 in Jacksonville; the son of Albert Fredrick and Ruth Viola Cox Hoagland. He married Bernetta L. “Bernie” Headrick on June 20, 1969 in Jacksonville and she survives.
He is also survived by five nieces and a nephew by marriage and special friends, Mary L. Longmeyer and Karl Wagner, both of Jacksonville. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Hoagland was a 1961 graduate of Jacksonville High School and a 1969 graduate of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. He returned to farm in rural Jacksonville and later to work as a truck driver. He owned and operated John’s Wood Shop and was well-known as a talented woodworker, especially in wood marquetry.
As a young man, he attained the Eagle Scout award. John was a devoted Mason for 41 years, serving as a past master of Woodson Lodge #1011 and more recently as a member of Wadley Lodge #616. He was also active in the York Rite bodies including serving as past commander of Hospitaller Commandery #31 Knights Templar. He was a past worthy patron of Wilber Chapter #358 Order of Eastern Star.
In addition, John was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Jacksonville Moose Lodge # 682, Tri-County Woodworkers Club, and served 10 years as the Republican Precinct Committeeman for Woodson.
