John R. Campbell, beloved husband of Ann Campbell, died on February 25, 2007 at the Westerly Hospital. He was the father of JoAnn Campbell, Mark Campbell, and Michael Campbell. John was the son of the late Raymond E. Campbell and Irene F. (Fahey) Campbell of Stonington.
He graduated from Stonington High School, a scholar athlete, as a member of the National Honor Society and received letters in cross country, baseball and basketball. He continued his education
at the University of Vermont where he earned a degree in Mathematics. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity and maintained friendships with his brothers throughtout his lifetime.
John served his country in the Vermont and Connecticut National Guard, receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1979. He was employed as a programmer/analyst for Davis Standard and Dataflow for most of his career. John was a coach in the Pawcatuck Little League system for many years. He also coached for the YMCA youth basketball league. Mr. Campbell was a driver for the Stonington Community Center’s “Meals-on-Wheels” program, a Partner-in-Hope for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, and a supporter of South County’s Habitat for Humanity. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church of Westerly.
Known for his love of sports, John was a devoted fan of the Boston Red Sox. In 2004 he traveled to St. Louis with his son, Mark, to witness a lifetime dream come true as the Red Sox took over the World Series title. In recent months, he received calls of encouragement from Trot Nixon and Rico Petrocelli urging him to continue to “fight the good fight” in his battle against cancer. He was also a longtime fan of the Providence Friars and a member of the Friars Backcourt Club.
Along with his wife and children, he is survived by his mother-in-law, Marie P. Smith, of Pawcatuck, and a sister, Liz Gordon, of Oregon. He was predeceased by his father-in-law, Earl R. Smith, brother-in-law, Thomas L. Smith, and Grandmother, Gladys Fahey.

A Service of Communion will the held at the Christ Episcopal Church, 7 Elm St., Westerly,
at 6 PM on Thursday, March 1st.
