John M Ayres, age 98, of Union Pier, died peacefully on Saturday, October 3, 2015 in Michigan City, Indiana.John was born January 11, 1917 in Lacota, Michigan, the son of Floyd O. and Marcia M. (Eitel) Ayres.John’s family moved to South Haven, Michigan when he was young and he graduated from South Haven High School in 1934. He earned both his Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree of Education from Western Michigan University. John served his country for five years in the U.S. Army Air Corp as an Aero Repair Chief in Casablanca.

He was awarded the Legion of Merit Medal. On June 14, 1952, John married Germaine Katherine Churan, deceased, at the New Buffalo United Methodist Church. John was employed as a teacher at New Troy and River Valley Schools, where he taught Wood Shop Class. He retired in 1979. He was a life member of the Three Oaks F&AM #239, a life member of the New Buffalo Rod and Gun Club, as well as a member of the Lakeside United Methodist Church.Preceding him in death is his wife Germaine, his daughter Charlotte Kurbis, and his brother Floyd.

John is survived by his son-in-law Jay Kurbis, as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
