John L. Elias, 92, of South Bend, IN, passed away at 4:45 a.m. Friday, August 8, 2014 in Healthwin Specialized Care Facility.
He was born on June 22, 1922 to the late George, Sr. and Gizella (Barkowicz) Elias in South Bend, IN, and was a lifelong resident. Along with his parents; he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Horvath; Gizella Nagy; and three brothers, Emery, Joe, and George Elias.
Mr. Elias worked at Bendix Corp for 37 years, before retiring on February 28, 1986. He also worked part time as an automobile mechanic at Kalicki’s service station.
On October 28, 1950, he married Henrietta Chlebek at Holy Cross Catholic Church in South Bend, IN.
John is survived by his loving wife, Henrietta Elias of South Bend, IN; several nephews & nieces; and great-nieces & great-nephews.
John was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, where he was a Tech Sergeant in the European Theatre and earned a bronze star during the Battle of the Bulge.
He was a life member of American Legion Post #357; member of Veteran of Foreign Wars Post #6248 in Decatur, MI; and a long time member of Corpus Christi Parish.
He loved to read and tinker with small engines for a hobby. John also loved to fish at the cottage in Marcellus, Michigan.
