WALLINGFORD – John Grady, 97, departed this life on February 26, 2018, peacefully in his home. He was the beloved husband of the late Mildred (Szad) Grady.
John was born in Ansonia on April 30, 1920 to the late John and Florence (Doll) Grady.
A veteran of World War II, John served aboard the USS Callaway, earning a purple heart for injuries resulting from one of two attacks on the ship by Kamikaze suicide pilots. He also had the honor of seeing the flag as it was raised at Iwo Jima. John enjoyed a career in sales, his last position with a company serving the film industry that took him all over the world. In retirement, he worked seasonally as a ranger and starter for Lyman Orchards Golf Club in Middlefield, settling into full retirement at the age of 90. The greatest accomplishment in his life was the pride and joy he felt after providing selflessly for his family.
John is survived by his sister, Kathy Grady of Ansonia, two daughters, Diane (and Gerard) Nania of Florida and Jacqueline Grady of Clinton, his daughter-in-law, Loydell Grady of Branford, four grandchildren, Nicole Martin of Georgia, Chance and John Grady, both of Connecticut, Courtney Grady of Florida, and four great-grandchildren. John is predeceased by his beloved son, Charles Grady of Tioga, Texas.
