John J. Huber, 82, of 23700 Marquette Street passed away Wednesday in his home in the care of his family. John was a lifelong resident of South Bend, Indiana and a renowned fisherman in the Michiana Steelheaders Club.

John was born on June 12, 1923, and grew up on Scott Street in South Bend as a member of St. Patrick Catholic church. Mr. Huber entered the United States Army in 1941, where he served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Special Forces. He was severely wounded at the front lines on February 3rd in France in 1945, in a heroic action and received the French Croix DeGuerre medal of honor from General Charles DeGaule. He also won three Bronze Stars, a Silver Star, and the Purple Heart. Upon returning to South Bend, John worked for and retired from, The Shultz and Birch Company of Chicago, Illinois.

John is survived by his loving wife, Merle (Howard) Huber of 32 years; his daughter, Rebecca Folk and her husband Bob; two stepsons, Edward Gordon and his wife Beth, and Tom Gordon and his wife Darlene. John also has four grandchildren, Ryan Folk, Phillip Gordon, Tina Mynsberge and Thomas Gordan III; and two sisters, Jeanette Orlowski and Rosemary Sergeant. John had two brothers who preceded him in death, Joseph Huber and Francis Huber. Rebecca’s mother, Mary Jane (Eaglesfield) Huber also preceded him in death.
