John H. Gwynn, 70, entered into heaven on November 1, 2008 after a nine year battle with cancer. His loving wife Alice D. Spencer Gwynn of fifty years cared for him and was at his bedside. He was born July 1, 1938 in Caswell County North Carolina, son of the late Clarence Gwynn and the late Lillie Pearl Watkins Gwynn. He graduated from Yanceyville High School and then joined the U.S. Army and served for five years. He met his wife Alice and married on Oct. 21, 1958. A daughter was born of this union. He then went to Germany where he served as a military police officer. Upon his return to the state, they moved to Long Island N.Y. were he worked as a tractor trailer driver for 23 years. He also helped care for adults in his home for 27 years. Retiring to upstate NY for 18 years, he enjoyed to hunt, fish, carpentry, gardening, and snowmobiling, and making maple syrup. John and wife loved to travel going to Canada, Puerto Rico, and Mexico. They also took cruises to Hawaii, Bermuda, Bahamas, and to the Caribbean Islands. He moved to West Virginia in 1999 and loved the beautiful people and the land where he could continue to hunt. John became a member of the First Baptist Church of Shinnston were he served as a deacon. He is survived by his wife Alice D. Spencer Gwynn; daughter Vickie C. Jackson,; granddaughters Hillary and Tiffany Jackson and great granddaughter Payton Marie of Beacon, N.Y. ; Sisters Ophelia Gwynn Jonathan and Shirley Gwynn of Long Island N.Y.; also many nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parent’s two brothers, Ervin and James Gwynn and sister Peggy Ann Gwynn Brown, all of Yanceyville N.C.
