John Granger Korslund, 94 years of age, of Lincoln, formerly of Beatrice passed away Thursday, November 8, 2018 at the Woodlands at Hillcrest in Lincoln. He was born on October 19, 1924 in Eagle Grove, Iowa to William and Florence (Granger) Korslund. John grew up in Hastings. He served in the Third Army in Europe in World War II with the 199th General Hospital. In 1947, John married Yvonne Piel of Rennes, France. John graduated from Kearney State Teachers College and obtained a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Nebraska. He excelled in debate and was an avid tennis player. Yvonne passed away in 1971 and John married Margot Mauney in 1977.
John was a high school teacher and administrator in Falls City, Stella and Wymore and in the US military school system overseas. He served in Germany, France and Italy. His last assignment was as a superintendent of the military schools in Aviano, Italy. After retirement, he continued to live in Italy with Margot, and taught for a time at the Community College of the Air Force. John and Margot moved to Beatrice in 2001 where John enjoyed being a volunteer reader for the Head Start program, delivering Meals On Wheels and being a member of the Homestead Early Risers Kiwanis Club. He believed in Jesus Christ and the story of the Good Samaritan held special meaning for him.
John is survived by his children, Paul Korslund and wife Bernadette of Lincoln, Annette Korslund and special friend Tom Delahunty of Denver, Colorado; grandchildren, Claire Oglesby of Lincoln, Eric Korslund of Virginia Beach, Virginia; great-grandchildren, Joslyn Oglesby, Cameron, Charles, Kingston and Finn Korslund; sister, Mary Ann Roucis of Denver, Colorado; step-son, Allen Mauney of Olympia, Washington; and sister-in-law, Hilde Paduano of Staten Island, New York; He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Margot on January 16, 2017; and sisters, Kathryn Wilson and Janet Kulenguski.
