John Gillespie, age 84, of New Smyrna Beach, died Friday, July 30, 2021 at AdventHealth Hospice, Daytona Beach.
Born in Hardgate, Scotland to John and Catherine Campbell Gillespie, John moved with his family from Scotland to New Jersey when he was 13 years old. He lived most of his life in Florida moving from DeLand to New Smyrna Beach in 2003.
He was a United States Air Force veteran and was the Chief for the Volunteer Fire Department in Ormond by the Sea, which was later merged with the Volusia County Fire Department.
John enjoyed sailing, traveling and loved the North Carolina mountains, as they reminded him of Scotland. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
Survivors include his wife of 18 years, Janice; son, Kevin (Taryn) Gillespie, of Dothan, Alabama; daughters, Michelle (Lance) Nemier, of Hunting Beach, California and Catherine (Chuck) MacArthur, of Ormond Beach; stepson, Sylvan McElroy IV, of New Smyrna Beach; step daughter, Megan McElroy (Robert Derr), of New Smyrna Beach; 8 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; sister, Jeanette Gillespie, of New Jersey. John was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
