John E Nye was born on April 22, 1922 in Rochester, New York. His parents were the late Judge Olin T. Nye and Ethel Pierce Rawlinson Nye. His early years were spent in Buffalo, NY, moving to Watkins Glen, NY when he was three years old. He was educated in Watkins Glen Schools until the 9th grade, when he was enrolled in Kentucky Military Institute. He graduated from KMI in 1940 and entered Cornell University. He was a member of Kappa Delta Rho while at Cornell. On April 1, 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Infantry, serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He returned to the States on December 1, 1943, and married Kay Odell in Seneca Falls, NY on December 23, 1943.
