Mr. John E. Clayton, 97, of Burlington, died on Friday, January 6, 2017 at his residence.
A native of Orange County, he was born on May 12, 1919 to William A. Clayton and Effie Lynch Clayton both deceased. John was the husband of Edith Buff Clayton for 66 years, who survives. He retired after 45 years as a service station manager with Gant Oil Company and served as a Staff Sargent in the United States Army Air Corps. Mr. Clayton was a Deacon and Elder of Piedmont Presbyterian Church. Mr. Clayton, Elon College Class of 1949 was inducted into the Elon College Sports Hall of Fame for his outstanding play in baseball and basketball.
In addition to his wife of the home, survivors include two sons, John E. Clayton, Jr. of Chapel Hill and W. Buff Clayton and wife Delcia of Burlington; and two grandchildren, Laura Clayton of Morrisville and Brandon Clayton of Burlington. He was predeceased by 4 brothers, Dolphin, Elmo, Floyd, and Grover Clayton.
