John was born March 17, 1928 in Salt Lake City, UT, the son of John Dale Ensign and Clara Hinckley. He grew up as the oldest in a family of three children. He especially enjoyed being outdoors and going for adventures with his little brother Roger, and his dogs Mike and Skippy.
He had many good memories of growing up surrounded by family members and spending quality time with his father in nature.
