John grew up on the high plains of Eastern Colorado, in Arriba, before joining the Navy, where he served on the USS Blandy, stationed out of Newport, Rhode Island. Not being a fan of the city with no open spaces he returned to Colorado for a short time before heading West to California. In the private sector, John was employed as a Longshoreman in Southern California, before returning to Colorado as a Municipal Financial Consultant, Insurance Advisor, before retiring in 1999.

The love for Colorado, the Rocky Mountains, the High Plains, being a cowboy and watching every single western movie that was ever made, never wavered.
