John A. Cavanna, 86, of Holiday City Carefree section of Berkeley Twp., NJ, passed away Saturday, April 7, 2018 at Shorrock Gardens, Brick, NJ. Born in Newark, NJ, he lived in Belleville, NJ for 50 years before moving to Berkeley Twp. in 2015.

John was a US Army Korean War Veteran, attaining the rank of Corporal. He received the Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, the United Nations Service Medal, the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, the Presidential Unit Citation and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a Carpenter at O.A. Peterson in Montclair, NJ for many years and was a 63-year member of the Carpenters Union Local 253.

John was a parishioner of St. Maximilian Kolbe RC Church, Berkeley Twp. and was a former member of Immaculate Conception RC Church, Newark, NJ, where he served on the Parish Council, the Finance Committee and the Grounds Committee. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 129, Toms River, and the Holiday City Carefree Men’s Club.

John is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Mary (nee Banta), his three daughters JoAnn Rasinski of Brick, NJ, Catherine Hara and her husband Michael of Norwalk, CT, Mary Ann Hipkin and her husband Bill of Plainfield, NJ and 8 grandchildren.
