John A. Mitchell, Sr., 93, of 2460 West Southern Avenue, South Williamsport, died Saturday, May 7, 2011 at The Gatehouse Hospice following a brief illness.

John and his wife, the former Hilda A. Stroup, observed their 72nd wedding anniversary on February 13, 2011.

John was an Army veteran of World War II and retired from the former Bethlehem Steel Corp.

John enjoyed doing yard work, spending time with his family and was a devoted husband and father.

Born May 6, 1918 in Williamsport, he was the son of John and Latisha Baer Mitchell.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Stephen of South Williamsport; daughter, Sandra VanHoesen of Tucson, AZ; brothers, Myron of Selinsgrove and Richard of Redding, CA; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

John was predeceased by a son, John, Jr.; brother, Robert and sisters, Harriett Lose, Helen Shaffer, Elizabeth Counsil and Mary Marino.

The family suggests contributions in his name may be made to the Susquehanna Hospice, 1100 Grampian Blvd., Williamsport, PA 17701.
