Joe William Heward, 93, of Three Oaks, died peacefully Saturday afternoon, August 4, 2012 at The Hearth at Juday Creek in Granger surrounded by his loving family. Joe was born on September 3, 1918 in South Bend to Ola E “Ole” and Ruth (Lee) Heward. He graduated from Three Oaks High School in 1936 and served his country in the U.S. Army, stationed in France and Belgium.

Joe married Helen Jensen on July 19, 1942 and they recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Joe loved gardening and was known in the area for his farm stand, keeping it well stocked with the fruits of his labor. Joe was a sports fan and was passionate about baseball. He was a regular spectator at the River Valley High School games. His interests were varied, as were his talents, not only did Joe have a big appetite, he attended Clown College, sang in a Barbershop Quartet, enjoyed fishing, traveled with his wife, and had fun at Disney!

Joe was employed at Western Electric in Niles and was a Berrien County Deputy Sheriff working his way up to Under Sheriff. Joe was a member of the Three Oaks United Methodist Church where he sang in the church choir, he was a 32nd degree Mason with the Three Oaks F & AM Lodge # 239; a charter member of the Three Oaks Lions Club and a Shriner.

Survivors include his loving wife, Helen; children, Mary Ellen (Robert) Behrle of Niles, Michigan, William Lee (Jill Dardig) Heward of Worthington, Ohio, Joseph Erwin (Joyce) Heward of Mattawan, Michigan, Sue Ann (Mark) Peterson of South Bend, Indiana; grandchildren, Laura, Lee, Lynn, Amy, Jacob, Madelyn, Justin and Matthew; great granddaughter Brooklyn and sister in law, Evelyn Heward of Bridgman. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert Heward.
