Joe C. Roorda, age 88, of DeMotte, passed away Friday, March 3, 2017 at the Franciscan Health Ctr in Crown Point, IN.
Joe Charles Roorda was born in DeMotte, IN to Frank and Agnes Roorda on June 18, 1928. As a youth, Joe worked for Fred B. Moolenaar in truck farming until he entered the service at 19 years old. He served in the Army for two years during the Korean War, during these years he married Jeanette Meyer. Joe became a brick layer and worked for Custodis Construction Company, building smoke stacks all over the country. During his retirement years, he worked for the Indiana State Highway Department, Sipkema Farms for many years, and he and his grandson Matthew owned a small seal coating business employing, at times, all the other grandsons. All who knew Joe knew he loved his family, but also loved working. Joe was a member of American Reformed Church for over 68 years. He loved fishing, hunting, and traveling to Florida.
Joe will be sadly missed by his wife of 65 years, Jeanette, and his loving children, Daughter, Jenny (Don) Tillema, sons Joe Frank Roorda and John Clarence (Kathy) Roorda. Grandchildren Eric, Neil, David, and Jeni Rae Tillema; Matthew and Joey Roorda; Adam Roorda, Courtney Roorda Vogel, and Christy Roorda Nelms. Great grandchildren Ethan and Tyler Tillema; Kody, Noah, and Elena Tillema; Logan Tillema, and Collins and Cannon Vogel. Joe has one dear brother, George Roorda.
His parents and his grandson Joey Roorda preceded him in death.
