Joanne Therese Martinek, 88, passed away quietly on January 25, 2021. She was born in
Chicago, Illinois on July 26, 1932 to Arthur and Mary Harris. She married John P. Martinek on
September 1, 1951 and together they raised six children. They moved to Scottsdale, Arizona, in
1959. John passed away in January 2003.
She is survived by five children: Mary Connell, Ellen Straine, Anne Law, John Martinek, and
Amy Schuster. Her youngest son, Jeff, passed away in June 2018. She is also survived by her
sister, Jacqueline Kron, and eleven grandchildren including Nelson, Max, William, Lily, Jacob,
Mia, Alayna, Sam, Tom, Jack, and Elizabeth.
Joanne’s reputation for keeping a clean house was known far and wide. Once the children
were (mostly) grown, she enjoyed working at The Broadway department store at Los Arcos Mall
in Scottsdale. Later in life, she discovered a passion for quilting and made many wonderful
friends in the quilter’s group “Sunland Stitchers” at Sunland Village East in Mesa.
