Joan Ruth Ziebell Myers was born on October 6, 1929, in Kendallville, Indiana. She was the only child of Clarence and Bernice Ziebell. After graduating from Kendallville High School (class of ’47), Joan was active with Tri Kappa, an Indiana women’s philanthropic organization. In 1951, she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Indiana University, graduating with honors. She taught kindergarten and elementary school for many years. In eighth grade, Joan first met her future husband, John David Myers, when his cousins held her arms so that he could kiss her. They did not see each other again until they were both in college.
