Joan McCarty, Albuquerque businesswoman, passed away on September 21, 2016.

Born, November 30, 1941, in Titonka Iowa, she moved with her family to Albuquerque at age seven and made a wonderful life for all, as a loving granddaughter, daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and friend. Joan was the hardest of workers, owning and operating restaurants (part of the original Mac’s Steak in the Rough) and a day care center with 30 kids at all times. Her retirement “fun” project was owning and operating a gift shop, Joan’s Chili Pepper Emporium, working alongside her husband, telling tourists of the wonders of New Mexico and sharing our love for the food and culture.

As industrious as she was, she was a mother and grandmother first. She will always be known as the very best of both. From the moment she became a grandmother, she would say that there weren’t words to describe the joy of being one. She loved with her whole heart, encompassing understanding, compassion, energy, fun, faith in God, and a love of life.

Joan, was preceded in death by her beloved grandmother, Berdine Korte; parents, Henry and Evelyn Korte; best friend, Maryann Nichols; nephew, Dudley McCarty; niece, Michelle Lofton; brother-in-law, David McCarty; and the love of her life, her husband, Jasper “Newt” McCarty.

Mom is survived by her aunt, Pat Jenkins and husband, Dennis; sisters, Karla Suttie and husband, John, Deborah Johnston and husband, Jerry; daughter, Jillene McCarty and partner, Mike Corr; sons, Newton McCarty and wife, Amy, Jonathan McCarty and wife, Suzanne; nephew, Jeff McCarty and wife, Pat; and her nine grandchildren, Tanner and Morgan Rawson, Levi, Jacob, Noah and Megan McCarty, Lilly, Karina and Rhett McCarty.
