Due to the untimely death of his Mother when Jim was only 3, he and his siblings were reared by the maternal grandparents, Vern and Mabel Seward of Royal Center, IN. Jim attended school in Royal Center and was especially active in basketball. After graduation in 1945 and during the Korean Conflict, Jim joined the Navy. Based in San Diego, he served as Engineman II on LST 1126, which serviced bases in Alaska and several points in the Pacific during the next four years. After an honorable discharge from the Navy, Jim applied to the Indiana State Police Academy, was accepted, and went through training at IU in Bloomington. He was appointed to the Department on October 1, 1955. After spending some time as a rookie at the Peru Post, Jim transferred to the newly opened Indiana Toll Road. On May 21, 1957, Jim married Sue Jones, a native of Franklin, IN and former Toll Road employee in Indianapolis. They settled in South Bend. During the next 18 years, Jim worked his way up through the ranks and retired with 20 years of service on May 31, 1976, while serving as the Lieutenant in command of the Toll Road District. Another job and a totally different career awaited. On June 1, 1976, Jim went to work for the St. Joseph Bank & Trust Co. in South Bend in training for Branch Management. During the next 16 years he served the public at several branch locations, seeing two bank mergers and retiring in January 1992, as Manager at the Lakeville Branch, before the takeover by Key Bank. Mr. and Mrs. Stanley both retired in January 1992. The then spent several winters in Florida, where Jim became an avid saltwater fisherman. He also loved to play golf, was rarely without a good mystery novel and loved his computer.
