Daniel “Jim” Mechling, 87, of Idaho Falls, passed away January 22, 2018, at his home. He was under the care of Encompass Hospice.
Jim was born May 24, 1930, in Salt Lake City, UT, to Daniel Phelan Mechling and Margaret Marie Pein Mechling as the second child among eight. He grew up and attended schools in Idaho Falls and graduated from Idaho Falls High School in 1948. He served in the Korean War from 1950 to 1952.
On March 30, 1957, he married Sylvia Mae Kiernes in Salmon, Idaho. To this union were born two children, Dawn and Jean. They later divorced. Jim later married Gaynol Peterson Bishop on June 13, 1985. They spent 20 years together before she passed away on their 20th wedding anniversary.
Jim and Gaynol made their home in Idaho Falls, Idaho, where Jim worked various jobs until he was employed at the Bonneville County Road and Bridge Department. He drove truck and later became the loader operator until he retired in 1995.
Jim loved fishing, hunting and was very skilled at fixing, repairing or building just about anything he set his mind to. He was quite the handyman and he remodeled his home and even built his own cabin in Palisades, Idaho.
Daniel is survived by his daughter, Dawn (Fred) McLamarrah of South Jordan, UT; daughter, Jean (Jesus) Orozco of Rigby, ID; five step-children, Greg, DeeDee, Randy, Bonnie, and Vicki; sister, Myrna Coffell of ND; brother, Dennis (Clarice) Mechling of Idaho Falls, ID; sister, Phyllis (Chet) Adams of Firth, ID; sister-in-laws, Beverly, Donna Belle, and Claudine; 7 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Gay, three brothers, Keith, Walt, and Glen, and a sister, Donna.
